Ubuntu Linux for Dummies by Paul Sery is a great book for getting started with Linux.  It comes with a CD that includes Linux along with the Firefox browser.  You will be up and running quickly with this book and the CD.  You can run Linux  from the CD or install it permanently on your computer when you are ready.

This version of Linux will allow you to do word processing, spreadsheets, Firefox internet browsing, reading PDF and picture files, printing, and many other functions.  You probably won't need Windows for anything.  Internet access is very fast and trouble free to any websites.

The author also discusses the file structure of Linux, how to find things, and various commands although most people will just be using the Windows-like icons to get their tasks done.  This book is an excellent way to get started with Linux!
